This is a topic that I did think long and hard about, but the logistics of trying to feed billions of traveling aliens across the galaxy that can only eat food from their home planet is... well, astronomical. And unrealistic. 

Instead, a lot of trade involves foods and herbs and plants from settled planets, as there are strict laws about just taking from populated planets. A lot of food is grown on sanctuaries, but it's hard to replicate growing conditions on a space station, so some stuff can *only* come from the planet itself. 

While replicating food a-la Star Trek is possible, it tastes awful, and is really only done as last resorts.
